Learn, Train, Make, Grow @ Goldsmiths Community Centre
It’s a big year for South East Lewisham as we follow the roadmap out of lockdown towards our ‘new normal’ ways of living and working. We find that our basic needs remain the same - the need to feel secure, to connect with our communities and the green spaces around us, the need to learn new things and keep growing, and to find personal and collective meaning and purpose. If anything, the pandemic has made these needs more visible than ever. Most, if not all of us, have been affected by the COVID 19 pandemic and for some it has changed the way they live for better or worse. As a community centre built pre-WW2 to support and enhance the lives of local residents, who better to set the tone for recovery and repair in Whitefoot and Downham? But if we’ve learned one valuable lesson from the pandemic, it is that we truly are #bettertogether when we work as a team, collaborate, and partner with others. Our partnerships, support network and collaborations have grown this last year and will keep growing. We aim to get local residents in Lewisham more involved in our projects, events and activities - the biggest project being the development of our Learning and Wellbeing Hub - a space to learn, train, make and grow! We are collaborating with several community groups and organisations at grassroots level to create learning and development programmes aimed at improving wellbeing through training workshops, skills courses, educational classes, work experience and volunteering opportunities. Access to information, training and education, are just some of the protective factors that promote community mental health and wellbeing. This project will not only contribute to Lewisham’s post-pandemic repair and recovery mission, but also provide a sustainable hub that facilitates community cohesion, resilience and empowerment with reliable opportunities for social connection through shared skills learning and sharing and by getting people together to be actively involved and working towards a shared purpose.
